The most common reason people give for not running consistently is time. I have a full-time job in Charlotte, a life outside of work, and a training plan that calls for four runs per week plus two strength sessions. Making that happen requires structure — not motivation, not inspiration, just a repeatable system.
The system I’ve built isn’t complicated. But it required being honest about when I actually have time and energy to run, rather than building a schedule around when I think I should want to run.
Morning Runs Changed Everything
I run before work four days a week. My alarm goes off at 5:30. I’m out the door by 5:50. Most days I’m back, showered, and ready to work before 7:30 with the hardest part of my day already done.
The reason morning runs work better than evening runs for me isn’t ideology — it’s that evening runs compete with everything else. A late meeting, social plans, fatigue, low motivation after a long day. Morning runs compete with sleep and almost nothing else. Once the alarm is set and the habit is established, the decision is already made.
Planning the Week on Sunday
Every Sunday evening I look at the coming week and assign my runs to specific days. I note anything that might affect timing — early meetings, travel, evening commitments — and adjust the schedule before the week starts rather than reacting to it in real time.
I keep my long run on Saturday morning. It’s the run I protect most aggressively. Everything else in the week can flex; the Saturday long run stays unless I’m sick or injured.
The Minimum Viable Week
Some weeks are hard. Travel, work deadlines, life. For those weeks, I have a minimum viable version of my training: three runs instead of four, shorter than planned but completed. Doing something consistently beats doing the perfect plan inconsistently.
The goal of a running routine isn’t a perfect log. It’s to show up enough times over enough weeks that the fitness accumulates and the habit holds. A full-time job doesn’t make that impossible — it just makes the planning part non-negotiable.
